Mpox Outbreak No Longer a Global Health Emergency, Says WHO
WHO Declares Public Health Emergency Over Mpox Ends
On May 11, 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreak is no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
WHO's Decision Based on Recent Outbreak Trends
The WHO's decision is based on the following factors:
- Decline in reported cases globally
- Increased availability of vaccines and treatments
- Improved understanding of the virus and its transmission
WHO Remains Vigilant
Despite the PHEIC being lifted, the WHO emphasized that mpox remains a public health concern and that continued surveillance and response measures are necessary.
Global Outbreak Response
Since the mpox outbreak began in May 2022, there have been over 85,000 reported cases in 110 countries.
The majority of cases have occurred in men who have sex with men (MSM).
Symptoms and Transmission
Mpox symptoms include:
- Fever
- Rash
- Swollen lymph nodes
The virus is transmitted through close contact with an infected person, their bodily fluids, or contaminated objects.
Prevention and Treatment
There are vaccines available to prevent mpox, and antiviral medications can be used to treat the infection.
Other preventive measures include:
- Avoiding close contact with infected individuals
- Practicing good hygiene
- Using condoms during sexual activity
