Mumbai Rains Wreak Havoc, Causing Waterlogging and Evacuations
Heavy downpour and high tide lead to disruption
Mumbai, India - The city of Mumbai was lashed by torrential rain on Sunday, leading to widespread waterlogging and disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 152mm of rainfall in the city, coupled with a high tide of 444m at noon, causing waterlogging in many areas.
Evacuations in Ghatkopar
The heavy rains also triggered a landslide in Ghatkopar, a densely populated suburb of Mumbai. As a precautionary measure, around 100 people were evacuated from the affected area to nearby shelters. No casualties have been reported so far.
Weather forecast
The IMD has issued an impact-based forecast for heavy rainfall over Mumbai, valid until 21 July 2024. Moderate to intense spells of rain are very likely to continue over the city, raising concerns about further flooding and disruptions.
