RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Lionel Messi ended his wait for a first major international title as Argentina beat Brazil in the Copa America final in Rio's Maracana stadium.
Messi was forced to watch much of the second half and extra time because of a leg injury. But Argentina still managed to win the match on penalty kicks, 4-2.
The victory gives Argentina its second straight Copa America title and its 15th overall.
Messi, who was named the tournament's best player, said after the match that winning the Copa America was a "dream come true."
"I've always wanted to win a title with the national team, and now I've finally done it," Messi said. "This is a very special moment for me."
Next, Argentina will play against Colombia in the 2024 Copa América final.
